Trails were packed yesterday with a couple of snowmobiles and should be good this weekend for some backcountry-like skiing. We now have 8+ km of maintained trails.

If you are out on the trails, you will likely meet some volunteers busy adding to our improved signage and putting up some more flagging for the benefit of our new groomer. The goal is to have the trails track-set for next weekend. Think snow.
The weather outlook for next week, of below freezing temperatures and snow every day, is promising. Once the weather turns colder, trails will be packed a couple of times and then track-set.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5378658025329132402.post-84175855478588797772016-01-07T08:59:00.003-05:002016-01-07T08:59:38.129-05:00Happy 2016Wishing everyone a very happy 2016 and plenty of good xc ski days.

Unfortunately, we are off to a slow start this winter; to date there has been no grooming or track-setting because of lack of snow.

Membership is also tracking slowly - to be expected given the conditions. It is important however that you support Beaver Valley Nordic by joining or renewing your membership. Membership forms are available at the Kimberley General Store and can be dropped off there as well. Forms can also be downloaded from the menu above and mailed or dropped off.

Happy trails.
What about you? Our amazing groomer, JT is track-setting Friday to get the trails in great shape. Maps and permissions have been replenished at the trailhead mailbox. If you haven't skied the new sections, now's your chance.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5378658025329132402.post-43784894506855647912015-03-01T08:05:00.000-05:002015-03-01T08:05:10.855-05:00Nordic Trails March 1I got out skiing yesterday afternoon - just had to check out the new trails. I'm happy to say that all the new trails have been groomed and track-set and although I didn't ski the whole original loop, it appeared that everything had been groomed.

A little bit of friendly education seems to have had an impact as the only tracks we saw beside ski tracks were turkey, deer and we think probably coyote. We caught sight of an animal on the tracks ahead of us before it bolted into the bush. When we got to that spot we saw paw prints and some scat that was not deer poop.

A high of -6 C is forecast for this afternoon, just like yesterday. That balmy temperature combined with the sunshine makes for perfect conditions. Some wind but no significant drifting.

We xc skied in April last year. Let's hope for the same this year.
There has been a higher incidence this winter of snowshoers walking on ski tracks. After our positive experience last year sharing the trails, this is a little unexpected. The sign shown here has been posted in a couple of high traffic areas and we will post more as needed.

Snowshoers are often unaware of the needs of skiers and the labour involved in maintaining the trails. It is usually not a problem once they understand the situation.

If you are a skier and you encounter snowshoers on the ski tracks, politely make them aware of snowshoe damage to ski tracks but also the opportunity to use the trail cooperatively.

I went out with JT yesterday afternoon on the "sled" to show him the new Homestead Loop (L) so it has been packed down. It will take a few more runs before it can be track-set. Let's hope for next weekend. It's nice for back country skiing and a bit easier now breaking trail.

While we were out we track-set the loop closest to the Trailhead (ABCM) called, for now, Trailhead Loop (L) and also the Northwest Passage (JK) back to the road allowance. Unless you're protected in the trees, it's difficult to tell the groomer has been on other sections of trail; nevertheless there is a good base and skiers may reestablish the tracks. There is potential for some track-setting this morning.

Some skiers have been reporting on the trails and I really welcome and appreciate your feedback.

Picture the trail area divided into quadrants with 4A running E-W and the Wodehouse Creek running N-S. There are two new loops one in the SW quadrant and one in the NW quadrant that have not been groomed but are worth checking out. The SW loop, tentatively called the Homestead Loop is well flagged from 4A. The NW trail, tentatively called the Northwest Passage, is marked with a "K" at 4A and with a "J" at the junction with the old ski trail. "J" is a little further south than before and the reroute has been well flagged.
All have been groomed and track-set. You will need a map for this to make sense. Members' coloured maps are at the Kimberley General Store. Day-user b&w maps are in the black mailbox at the trailhead.

One new loop, tentatively called the Homestead Loop (KL) is well-flagged and brushed. As of late yesterday, it had not been groomed but would certainly be an enjoyable back-country ski, especially if you go with a group to take turns breaking trail.

The other new trail J-K (Northwest Passage) was brushed out last Saturday but has not been groomed as of late yesterday. Because of grooming needs we are rerouting the section of trail that connects with the old trail at J. J junction will be relocated hopefully before the weekend and the reroute well-flagged. Suggest that skiers and snowshoers avoid until the reroute is complete. Notice will be posted here.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5378658025329132402.post-32660345399646152512015-01-10T08:38:00.002-05:002015-01-10T08:41:42.465-05:00Saturday, Jan. 10

We definitely have enough snow on our trails. Our grooming is done courtesy of the Beaver Valley Ski Club. I post the grooming report on this blog when I receive it.

Members and guests of the Nordic Club could provide valuable information for other users by commenting here about conditions on the trails.

Current members who have not picked up their membership packages may do so at the Kimberley General Store. Guests (day-pass users) will find registration envelopes including a trail map in the black mailbox on the trailhead sign. The suggested donation rate is $6/person per day. Registration is a requirement of Cross Country Canada for insurance purposes.
Thanks JT for doing your best to groom and track-set the trail. In the trees there was enough snow to make skiing pleasant but in open areas the trails were very icy. Nevertheless we skied most of the route with the exception of the Conservation Land. We gingerly traversed down Jensen's Hill some on skis, some on foot. In conditions like today, skiing/walking is often the wisest course of action (not on the ski tracks of course). Despite the wind and the ice, skiers today enjoyed the trail and plan to come back hopefully with more forgiving conditions. As Ward said, it wasn't Greenland.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5378658025329132402.post-37922732592098476972014-01-12T09:48:00.001-05:002014-01-12T09:48:16.967-05:00Grooming ReportsStill trying to streamline grooming reports and trail condition reports. Have seen the trail at the trailhead today but not skied it. Skiers, it would be very helpful if you shared any trail information with me so that I can pass it along, or post remarks on Facebook. Thanks for your help.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5378658025329132402.post-1363409951526490412014-01-10T08:53:00.000-05:002014-01-10T08:54:12.004-05:00NEC Confirmation of NEC approval of the BVNSC cross country ski and snowshoe trails is still pending.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
